Carlo Gianferro is a freelance photographer living in Rome and is no stranger to KL Photoawards, being a main prize winner in 2009, and again in 2011 with his photograph Lunch with the Dead, Republic of Moldova. The whimsical image depicting a family enjoying a meal over the tombstone of a loved one at a local cemetery won the judges over and selected as the second prize in the Portrait category. His Roma Interiors series documenting the grandiose interiors of Gypsy homes won the 1st Prize Portrait Stories of the World Press Photo 2009.

KLPA posed some questions to Carlo about his approach to socio-cultural photography, and particularly his style or signature of his photography.

KLPA : Hi Carlo, firstly, congratulations for winning the Second Prize in the Portrait Single award last year with your image titled Lunch with the Dead in Moldova. You were also a finalist in the KL Photoawards 2009 with Boy, taken in Tanzania. Looking at your website, you have been busy with new essays recently. Can you please tell us what you got interested in the Moldavan story?

CG : In the series "Lunch with the Dead" I realised in Moldova, I was fascinated by the idea of a ceremony that combines religious spirituality with a more cheerful and happy spirit. People celebrating their deceased relatives in this way is unusual in European culture. The contrast of these two aspects led me to complete a story that combined the religious example with the joy of a celebration.

KLPA : The images from the rest of the series show people relaxing and celebrating amongst their loved ones who have passed on. In many cultures, especially in the East, there are similar cultural and religious practices. Are you surprised by the similarities of these events from different continents? How much research did you do before you embarking on this series?

CG : I know there are several religious events concerning how death is celebrated in some countries such like Madagascar, Mexico and others. I would love to have the opportunity to document these various religious rituals about death either like the “happy” ones in Moldova or more solemn ones reflected in the Western culture.

KLPA : Presumably, you were an outsider photographing the very personal and intimate celebrations these families were having. Did you seek their permission or got to know them beforehand?

CG : To take part in a bright and cheerful ceremony allowed me to photograph the people peacefully. All of them welcomed me in a natural way, and invited me to sit down with them at the banquet near the graves to eat some food or drink a glass of wine or vodka, and then most of them allowed me to make some photographs. It was all very pleasant and at the end of the day I went away filled with food, sweets and…a little bit drunk!

KLPA : Looking at your impressive body of work, it appears that you tend to approach to document communities who are at the fringe of mainstream society, for example the Roma Interiors and the interior portraits in The Thin White Lines. Do you think your photography can bring more awareness to these peoples you document?

CG : In my projects I particularly focus on people and their communities, as they are the ones that shape their surroundings. Either in the positive and the negative aspects it is essential to talk about all the changes that people generate in their environments. They are impressions of life.

I try to see things from different points of view, to get somehow out from stereotypes; in my 'Roma Interiors' series, the more successful work, I showed the Gypsy people in a new way. No more beggars or the poor living in camps. In 'The Thin White Line' I realized in Israel/Palestine I wanted to show the daily domestic life that even in a place of conflict, remains similar for everyone, and say in this way what I feel: that these conflicts are at their origin fictitious, generated by politicians not by the common people. What I hope is that the viewer feels that message in my images than merely seen as a portrait.

KLPA : The very personal aspect of your photographs, capturing your subjects in their most relaxed environment, e.g. their living rooms, bedrooms etc requires someone with a special set of communication skills to interact with them. How do you gain their trust in what you are doing?

CG : From the moment I start traveling, even before working as a photographer I’ve always tried to make contact with the people of the place I was about to visit. One day I started knocking the doors of the houses just to be invited to have tea as an excuse to meet and talk with the people! This routine was very helpful for me to improve my personal approach to get in touch with people... or maybe my face inspires trust in the people…I don’t know!

KLPA : You have been photographing in the Middle East and Egypt for your most recent stories. We have so far been bombarded by images of violence and fighting, street images and crowds, etc in the mainstream media from this region over the last 12 months. It is therefore refreshing to see your approach, which shows the non-violence, homely and personal side of the human divide. The tranquility of these Arab portraits belie the conflicts they have to endure. How do you reconcile this in your photographs. In your mind, are you trying to show a different viewpoint?

CG : I partially answered this question above. All point of views are important. Conflicts have accompanied humanity since the beginning of the times. But inside these conflicts, life always continue, and at this moment I feel this is the aspect I want to depict in my photographs.

KLPA : Lastly, what is the single most important advice you can give to aspiring photographers, many who are so driven with the glamour of being a photojournalist?

CG : I think that ideas are more important than photographs. If a young photographer wants to emerge he should have something to say.

Interview : Antonio Faccilongo, The importance of 'being original.'

Antonio Faccilongo lives in Rome and is a freelance documentary photographer. His series Single Women, a conceptual documentary of Palestinian women left on their own in their homes, after their menfolk have either been arrested, imprisoned or killed in their struggle for an independent homeland, won the First Prize in the 2011 KLPA Story category. We asked Antonio the following questions to understand how he puts together his projects and realises them.

KLPA : Hi Antonio, I see that your Single Women series have also won some other prizes, can you tell us which other awards you have also received?

AF : I won 1st Prize in the Feature Category at PX3 2011, 1st Prize at WPGA Portraits & People, 1st Prize at WOW World of Women, 2nd Prize in Political Category at IPA, Special Mention at HPA Humanity Photo Award, Special Mention at Rotary Photo Contest and the work has been exhibited in many countries such as Italy, France, England, China, USA and Malaysia and will be displayed in Argentina in February 2012. I am very grateful to KL International Photoawards 2011 also, as this was the first prize to be awarded to this work.

KLPA : How long did you take to photograph the whole series?

AF : I was in Palestine about two months, between December 2010 and January 2011.

KLPA : Did you encounter any difficulties, technically or with your subjects? Was it difficult to make the arrangements to visit the women's homes etc?

AF : It was a beautiful and deep experience meet people into their houses and listened to their stories. The Palestinian people are very friendly and hospitable, but at first I struggled to get in touch with the women. The issue was very delicate. I asked them to invite me into their homes, but they are women. I asked them to put me up at their homes whilst their men are absent. There was great difficulty in arranging that. Things changed with the help of my fixer, an association of assistance to families of Palestinian detainees and a law society that takes care of enforcing the rights of prisoners.

So, thanks to them I managed to get myself to be accepted, but the real turning point came when a report of my project was published in a Bethlehem journal. The article that told of my presence in Palestine and my project on prisoners and their wives. Almost a tribute to my professionalism and the goodness of my intention. From that point on, I have always been (introduced) with the newspaper in hand, and I've had no problems.

I worked hard to get in touch with families and to find the right way to go, but luck was on my side.

KLPA : How do you decide whether a story is worth it shooting, how much research do you do beforehand?

AF : In the case of Palestine I worked for about two months before my departure and two months later for editing and retouching. I do not think there are strict rules to decide which story to follow, I think the most important thing is to tell it in an original way. Or find it's own personal style or a different style for each story.

KLPA : You came to Malaysia to receive your Awards in May 2011. How did you find Kuala Lumpur and the country?

AF : Malaysia is a fantastic country from every point of view. The nature is varied and beautiful, the Malaysian culture is fascinating and the people are very hospitable, kind and open-minded.

KLPA : You also returned to Malaysia later in the year. Were you researching for a new project? Have you completed the photography?

AF : After the trip to Malaysia to attend the award ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur Photoawards, I was so fascinated by Malaysia that I started looking for stories to come back. So last summer I came back for two months and I have followed many stories to show the great social and cultural emancipation present in Malaysia. The projects are work in progress.

KLPA : Lastly, there are so many photographers that we encounter who say they do not know what to photograph, or what stories they could do. Can you give us some advice about how you identify your stories?

AF : This is one of the hardest aspect of this work. There are many strong reports that do not even have to be searched for, such as the war in Libya, but in these circumstances you encounter a large number of photographers and many of the contemporary big names. So the risk of not seeing your pictures published is very high.

I seek information on the news of humanitarian organizations. I read the reports on international issues in newspapers and I navigate to independent blogs that sometimes give important information that traditional newspaper circuits ignore.

Perakian journalism student, Oh Chin Eng's entry 'Home', depicting a portrait of an elderly Sikh man posed in his living room, looking suitably attired in a comfortable checked sarong, barefoot and standing under a floral green door curtain, was awarded 3rd Prize in the KLPA2011 Portrait category.

We posed several questions to Chin Eng about his winning entry, so typical, in fact of thousands of Sikh homes up and down his multi-cultural and ethnic Malaysia. Here's what he has to say.

Q&A

KLPA : You have won the judges over with your entry 'Home'. Why do you think the judges saw your portrait as a finalist image?

OCE : First of all I am still surprised the photo had been selected as a finalist image. I guess the judges were captivated by the portrait of a Sikh man. How often do we see the Sikh community being documented? Look at his beard, his spectacles, and his attire. He is old but he still has the aura. It’s surprising to see a Sikh man in a house filled with colourful cultural objects. This photo does not only present this old man as a portrait and his home but it is also to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of the peoples in Malaysia.

KLPA : Is this part of a series or long term project?

OCE : I would say this is a series of old people I meet, I talk to, and I document their lives through images. I love taking photos of old people. This may be a long term project and my continuous effort to bring smiles to their faces and eventually to bring smiles to the people who see these images.

KLPA : Long term projects tend to require a lot of research and preparation, and patience. Have you been working on this and how would you approach a similar project if you identified a new story.

OCE : I’ve been taking photographs on certain issues before but I don’t think I have ever worked on a specific long term photography project. I would love to do that after my graduation at the end of 2011. A good photograph must come with a message. I believe first of all you must love what you are doing. You must love your subject. Then you do research on it, you see it from different perspectives, discover how it blends with the surrounding and have patience.

KLPA : Do you see photography projects to have a value in today's socially networked society, what are the benefits or disadvantages of the practice?

OCE : Of course photography projects still have their value in today’s social networked society. It will bring more good than harm. Doesn't a picture paint a thousand words? People believe what they see. A photograph can change people’s minds and perceptions. It is a powerful medium to convey messages to the world. It can change the world. But the photograph and the caption must not be misleading and create tension. Photography projects can include the participation from everyone especially the young internet savvy citizens. Let them be heard through images.

KLPA : Coming back to this photograph, did you encounter any technical difficulties in shooting it indoors etc?

OCE : Yes I did. I took this photograph in the late evening and indoor. The digital noise was kind of high due to poor lighting. I had to shoot it continuously and chose the best one. Besides, it was hard to make this uncle stand at that spot as he has a hearing problem due to his age.

KLPA : What is your approach to photographing strangers in the street or public areas? How do you select your subjects?

OCE : Well, most of the time I am only interested in old people and small kids. If it’s other age groups, it’s either their behaviour or actions that attract me. It is very rare for me to ask for permission before I shoot. I just snap it. I don’t believe in asking. If you ask for their permission, their expression and the way they react to my camera will be different. I prefer the first moment when they see my lens directed at them. The expression will be more innocent, sincere, true and honest. The way to make them not to run away from you is to pretend you are taking a shot of something next to them.

KLPA : What advice would you give to fellow photographers who are not so confident in photographing strangers?

OCE : Not really an advice but from my experience, you have to have the guts to do it. If you don’t overcome your fears then forever you will never be able to shoot what you desire. If the subject hesitate, then ask their permission and talk nicely to them. It works most of the time.

KLPA : What and who are your greatest influences in photography?

OCE : I think my surroundings and the people around me influence me a lot. I just love to take more good photographs every time I see others managed to get a good image. I feel challenged. At the same time, I am inspired. If they can, why can't I? Practice makes perfect. Besides, the only thing that can capture moments and document it to last forever is through photography. This fact keeps me going everyday. If I don’t take picture of let's say, a building today, it might be gone after few years. Photography makes me appreciate life and be grateful for what I have.

KLPA : Lastly, where do you see yourself in say, 5 years time in terms of your photography?

OCE : This is a tough question. I won’t stop taking photographs unless I’m not breathing anymore. I would love to hold a solo photography exhibition. I hope I will be hired to capture moments everywhere throughout the world. I want to go to the war zone. As a Journalism student, I wish to work for an international newswire such as AP, AFP or Reuters after 5 years. The most important thing that I want to do is to capture, document and keep moments that lasts forever as well as to touch people’s heart. Photography is an art of life.

OMG! What is going on?!!!!!

It was a head to head battle at first between Oh Chin Eng, Azman Hanif and Jowena Chua. Fast forward a few days, Jowena Chua is now taking on the lead in the race and getting closer to grabbing that Pacsafe Camera Bag! Oooo weeee she is in the lead by 330 votes ahead of Azman Hanif. Are You Going to Fight for It?!

We finally came to the end of the judging process yesterday.

Tensions were high this year. Everyone had a favourite and defended their choice till the end. The phrase of the day was "Are you going to fight for it?!", and yes, everyone did fight for their choices. It was a tough call this year, but eventually the judges came to a decision on who made it to the TOP 45 for Individual Portraits, TOP 10 for the Stories and our Winners for 2011.

As in every year, the selection for the Winners and Finalists would cover a wide range of photography genre, from journalistic photos to fine art perspectives. We would like to thank the judges for coming all the way down and up to Kuala Lumpur, as well as finding a bit of time over the weekend to select the best of the best for KL International Photoawards 2011.

Keep yourself posted to our blog to find out more on the Awards night. In the mean time, here are more photos from the judging weekend.

Hello readers!

Since we have been getting a lot emails, asking us about the judges... we thought - enough with the waiting and lets share the list of judges for 2011.

EVA McGOVERN

Eva McGovern has a BA in Art History from Nottingham University, UK and an MA in Contemporary British Art from the Courtauld Institute of Fine Art, London. She is currently Head of Regional Programmes for Valentine Willie Fine Art managing the exhibition programme of the 4 partner galleries in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manila and Yogyakarta.

GILLES MASSOT

After studying architecture in Marseille (France) and eventually graduating in photography, Gilles came to Singapore in 1981 to work in advertising. In 1985, he chose the path of travel photographer and writer. In 2000 he started teaching photography in LASALLE College of the Arts School of Fine Arts, where he completed his master in 2006.

NIRMALA KARUPPIAH

Nirmala Karuppiah works primarily with black and white photography, using traditional documentary techniques, as well as contemporary formats. Her unusual body of work involving the documentation of Malaysian dance troupes (presenting traditional Indian dance, a neglected performance art in Malaysia until recently), has brought much acclaim. She has traveled extensively to capture dancers, audiences, performances and silences. Nirmala also photographs urban and rural landscapes, investigating cultural dialogues and developments.

YUMI GOTO

Yumi Goto is an experienced freelance art and photo documentary curator, editor, researcher and consultant who focuses on the development of cultural exchanges that transcend borders. She collaborates with local and international artists who live and work in areas affected by conflict, natural disasters, current social problems, human rights abuses and women’s issues. She often works with international and local NGOs, humanitarian organizations and human rights advocates.

LIM CHEE WAH

The editor of Time Out Kuala Lumpur, Lim Chee Wah started learning about photography in his college days when he bought his first SLR camera. It was film back then and he liked the element of surprise that film gives. It was only when he got his first publishing job in a domestic travel magazine that he fully delved in the art of photography.

Hey folks!

We've been getting some strange entries this year, yo. And not the bad kind either! Way to pushing the boundaries of creativity and blowing our minds, people. No seriously, keep them coming!

As we polish off this brand spanking new bloggy, we're counting down six days left for you to send in your entries. That's right, less than a week to go and like all other years, it is right about this time when our servers go on over drive.

Then again, there is just something about late submissions that just brings out the best in the kinds of entries we receive. So yeah, all ye work-under-pressure people, give us all you've got! :D

KLPA 2010 travelling exhibition of Winners and Finalists in London, baby!

The Finalists Exhibition was held in London from 19 - 29th October, at the Limkokwing University in Piccadilly. The Reception evening was graced by the Malaysian Ambassador to UK,a s well as members from the British Malaysian Society, supporters and friends.More photos to be uploaded soon. The Boardroom was the venue, and with the building being under Heritage protection, we could not use traditional methods to display off the walls. At the end, a combination of string, split rings and clamps were used instead.

KLPA 2010 travelling exhibition of Winners and Finalists in Singapore!

FOST Gallery in Singapore hosted the KLPA 2010 travelling exhibition of Winners and Finalists, at their very chic space near Robertson Quay. The Opening on the 5th was attended by some 50+ invited guests and hosts,

including Claro Cortes, Andrew Robert Ng, Geraldine Kang and Rachel Lim from Singapore. The public exhibitions date are 6 ~ 21 August

KL PHOTOAWARDS 2010 AWARDS EVENING

At the Awards Evening at The Annexe Gallery in May, prizes and trophies were presented to Aglaé Bory (France), Andrew Robert Ng (Singapore) and Rachel Lim (Singapore). amd Courtney Barton (USA/Malaysia).

Other Finalists from the region were also present, including Geraldine Kang, Javier Chor, Gein Wong, Nikt Wong, and Jimmy Khoo.
